# Organize with categories

> Group your products into categories so a growing catalog stays easy to browse and filter.

Categories keep a growing catalog tidy. Assigning each product to a category lets you filter your Products and Inventory lists down to the group you care about, so you spend less time scrolling.

## Assign a category to a product

You set a product's category on the product itself, so a category comes into being the moment you first use it.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the product">
    Open **Products** and either add a new product or edit an existing one. See [Add a product](/guides/products-inventory/add-a-product).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a category">
    In the **Category** field, choose one from the list. The list includes a set of common categories to get you started, plus any category already used elsewhere in your catalog.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Save the product. It now belongs to that category, and the category is available to pick for other products.
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Tip>
  Keep category names short and consistent, for example `Gift Cards` or `Game Keys`. A handful of clear groups is easier to work with than many overlapping ones.
</Tip>

## Filter by category

Once your products carry categories, you can narrow your lists by them:

<CardGroup cols={2}>
  <Card title="Products list" icon="box">
    Filter the catalog down to a single category to find a product faster.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Inventory list" icon="key">
    Filter your stock overview by category to review one group's stock at a time. See [Manage stock](/guides/products-inventory/manage-stock).
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

<Note>
  A dedicated Categories page, where you can manage categories on their own and map them to what a marketplace expects, is on the way. For now you organize your catalog by setting the category on each product.
